Plot Summary: Summer in Hawkins, 1985

The season takes place in the summer of 1985, a year after the events of Season 2 . The newly opened Starcourt Mall has become the center of attention in Hawkins . Romance blossoms among the young characters as they approach adulthood . Mike and Eleven are now a couple, much to Hopper’s displeasure .

However, danger soon emerges. Dustin intercepts a mysterious Russian transmission while trying to contact his girlfriend Suzie . Meanwhile, Will senses that the Mind Flayer is still alive . Joyce discovers strange magnetic disruptions in her home .

The Mind Flayer has found a new host in Billy Hargrove. It uses him to “flay” other residents of Hawkins . The creature builds a physical body from the melted flesh of its victims . This abomination stalks Eleven, the only one who can stop it .

Beneath the Starcourt Mall, the group discovers a secret Russian base . The Soviets are trying to open a gate to the Upside Down . Hopper, Joyce and Murray Bauman must stop them while the kids face the Mind Flayer above .

The Ending Explained: Hopper’s Fate

In the finale, “Chapter Eight: The Battle of Starcourt”, the Mind Flayer attacks the mall food court . The creature nearly kills Eleven before Billy sacrifices himself . He redeems himself by impaling his body on the Mind Flayer’s tendrils . He dies in Max’s arms .

Below the mall, Hopper fights Grigori, a Russian assassin . Joyce must turn two keys to close the gate . Hopper nods for her to do it, even though he is still in the chamber . Joyce closes her eyes and destroys the Key . When she opens them, Hopper has vanished .

Three months later, a news report states that Jim Hopper died in the explosion . The Byers family, now including Eleven, decide to move out of Hawkins . Eleven finds a letter Hopper wrote her, telling her to keep the door open three inches . The season ends with the Byers driving away .
